Remaining unchanged for decades and enjoying a prime position amid 40 miles of heritage coast, the little fishing town of Aldeburgh is the perfect location for anyone renting a holiday home to enjoy a tranquil and relaxing feeling of space under wide East Anglian skies.

In some ways time appears to stand still in Aldeburgh and its surroundings. This is a county of gentle farmland and tranquil river estuaries where salty north sea breezes rustle through marsh reeds. The coastline is shaped by an endless, ongoing battle with sea erosion which has carved out an atmospheric seascape - wide, isolated expanses of shingle and dunes, warmed by the pastel shades of beach huts and windmills. Against this gentle backdrop, Aldeburgh forms a focal point where visitors can enjoy the catch of the day in local seafood restaurants and bistros or enjoy a drink in an oak-beamed inn. The little independent shops and arcades here are tastefully upmarket and the seafront's timber-framed Moot Hall houses the town's museum, recounting Aldeburgh's prosperous times as a shipbuilding centre and the fateful story of its legendary witches, who were hanged in the gallows here in the 17th century. Just outside, families indulge in the nostalgic pastime of sailing model boats in the town's miniature boating lake and tuck into fish and chips or an ice cream in a hark back to traditional seaside fun.

In June the air over the Alde estuary rings out with fine musical performances from young

composers united from around the world by the Aldeburgh Music Festival founded by Benjamin Britten in the 1940s. The June events are merely a springboard for a year-round music and arts programme which includes the Snape proms, opera and dancing as well as a celebration of Benjamin Britten's sinfonias. The events centre on the Snape Maltings Concert Hall, the original venue chosen by Britten, and converted from the original 19th century barley malt-house into an acoustic haven which has become known as one of the most beautiful settings to enjoy music in the country.

Just south of Aldeburgh, the river Alde snakes its way through marshland to meet Havergate Island where rare wading birds such as the Avocet and the Bittern have become a common sight amongst the reeds. This is Minsmere Nature Reserve, where the air is filled with birdsong in Spring and migrating flocks in autumn, and is a haven for birdwatchers, photographers and nature lovers alike. In the distance, Orford's 12th Century Norman Castle provides an atmospheric silhouette against the skyline and in the opposite direction, the most beautiful sunrises can be seen over the tidal creek of Orford ness and the shingle spits. Anyone looking to rent a holiday cottage or lodge in the area will not only enjoy the timeless beauty of these coastal lagoons and the music of Aldeburgh, but also the stony lanes and footpaths across heathland that provide gentle strolls and a sense of true escapism at any time of year.

About: The cottage is one of a pair on a small common by a converted chapel. It's in a tiny village on the Suffolk coast, right next to the RSPB reserve at Minsmere. The house and garden look out over protected marshland grazed by cattle and home to swans and many other birds. The cottage is a 30 minute walk across fields from the beach at Minsmere. It is just a short drive from Aldeburgh, Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich. There are some wonderful Adnams pubs close by, including the Eels Foot in Eastbridge itself, which is just a 200 yard walk away. It has great food, a garden and a small children's playground. The cottage was a second home to us when our children were young, and has a family feel about it. There is a sheltered patio at the back and a garden to the side, overlooking a water meadow straight out of a Constable painting. Leiston (3 miles away) has all the shops you might need and there are plenty of good restaurants around. There is a wonderful bakers called Smiths, in Leiston, just opposite the cinema... lovely, old-fashioned, white bread. There is a grocers called Baker Bros also in Leiston, which sells the most delicious ham on the bone. Highly recommended. The cottage has 1 double, 1 twin, and 1 double-bunk bedrooms. The bathroom has a shower over the bath. It is on the ground floor. There is an open plan lounge/diner/kitchen with open fire. A picture window overlooks the garden, and there is a sheltered patio to the rear. The garden looks out across beautiful protected countryside and is not overlooked.
