Bamburgh

Blessed with an extensive sandy beach and towered over by an imposing stone castle, the village of Bamburgh in the Northumberland country side is noted for its impeccable natural beauty.
It is a place with intriguing historical roots and was once the capital of Bernicia (Anglo Saxon kingdom). Building a castle in the area in the fifth century, Ida the Saxon King effectively established the settlement of Bamburgh originally Bebbanburgh and named after Queen Bebba. Whilst over the centuries, the village may have lost its significance as a major stronghold of British royalty, it has more than compensated by building a reputation as a holiday paradise.
Today there can be no mention of the village without talking about the ancient Bamburgh Castle that boasts spectacular views of the surrounding country side and coastline. Among the top ten English castles, its size alone is awe inspiring. Open to visitors from March through to October, the castle also has a small museum which exhibits the life and works of Sir William Armstrong, the first Baron Armstrong, who took possession of it in 1894. It has remained a property of the family ever since.
Another famous indigene of Bamburgh was Grace Darling, the young lady who along with her father rescued the survivors of SS Forfarshire; a luxurious boat that had fallen victim of the treacherous Farnes weather. Born in a small cottage on Brownsman Island, Darling later lived with her family in a lighthouse called Longstone which still stands today.
