Broadway

A sophisticated and upmarket gem of rural England, the picture-postcard villages of The Cotswolds languish gracefully in the soft rolling countryside that lies between Gloucester and Oxford. These are some of the most beguiling villages in England where pretty wild flowers adorn the facades and window boxes of tiny cottages of honey-coloured stone that huddle together in valleys or on little hillsides above babbling brooks. Choosing to go self-catering here allows you the freedom to tour and explore the area's beauty and its many attractions at your own pace whilst enjoying the home comforts of your very own cottage or rural lodge set amid some of England's finest countryside.
Ideally located on the north-western fringes of the Cotswold ridge, the historic village of Broadway lies within easy reach of everything this area has to offer. Its main street is a delight, majestically lined with Tudor, Stewart and Georgian buildings, with its lovely fringe of horse chestnut trees stretching its way elegantly up towards Fish Hill. Broadway Tower stands overhead, set within a country park of deer and wild flowers. A former country retreat of William Morris, founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, this elegant tower now houses fascinating exhibitions associated with the times when Broadway inspired Morris and other pre-Raphaelite artists. Close by, Sudeley Castle, with royal associations dating back 1,000 years, stands majestically within acres of woodland and classic English gardens, and protects and nurtures rare and exotic pheasants. Those interested in England's religious past would enjoy a visit to neighbouring Hailes Abbey. A medieval site now in ruins, it once enshrined a precious phial believed to contain the blood of Christ, and thus became an important centre for religious pilgrims, until it was discovered the phial contained nothing other than saffron and honey.
