About:
Primrose Cottage, Milton Abbas, Blandford Forum, Dorset, England Milton Abbas, in Hardy country, is England at its most seductive. Cob and thatch semi-detached houses, built in the 1700s by the Earl of Dorchester, sit in swards landscaped by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. The whole street is Grade-II listed and that includes Primrose Cottage. Expecting ancient beams and an inglenook fireplace? The sitting room has both, and a wood-burning stove to warm your toes. Deep window recesses could create gloom, but whitewashed walls bounce light brightly. There's a dining room with oak furniture, a kitchen with cupboards galore, and newly-fitted white bathroom. But beware: the door lintels are low and beanpoles will need to duck. Upstairs, the south-facing main bedroom has a metal-frame double bed with a firm mattress and a good cot. The feel is Victorian, with William Morris paper and curtains, brass lamps, antique tables and a large chest. The smaller bedroom has two comfortable bunks, and an upstairs loo comes in handy at night. Step out of the kitchen onto a patio with a picnic table for summertime meals; at the top of the hillside garden is an even better picnic spot: a sunny, wildflower oasis. There are lovely walks from the cottage and, on alternate Julys, there's an unmissable 18th-century Street Fair. Heating Storage heaters and the woodburing stove. All Electricity, Logs, and Linen is included.
