Grassington

Need a break? Find cottages in Grassington. Looking for somewhere different? Go to the search page.

Probably the most popular of the Yorkshire Dales villages, Grassington is situated at the centre of the Limestone and Upper Wharfedale Dales, making it a convenient location from which visiting tourists can explore other nearby villages, such as Skipton or Kettlewell.

Though commonly referred to as a village, Grassington is indeed a town, having being granted a fair and market charter in 1282 and both events being regular occurrences till the 1860s. The Grassington Farmers Market still takes place on the third Sunday of every month, boasting more than twenty stalls; visitors are treated to a wide variety of goods and wares, from pies and cakes to pottery and herbs.

For the most part a residential town, the area has been inhabited since the 13th century and has maintained a rather small population size since then. Early settlers were mainly farmers but due to its deposits of lead, Grassington quickly gained a reputation as a mining town. Evidence of this can be found at the Upper Wharfedale Folk museum which has some intriguing artefacts and documents of the town's rich tradition on display.

When not taking a tour of the museum, holiday-makers can take in the delightful scenery of the vicinity and its surrounding environment, either by walking through Grass Wood on a guided tour or paying a visit to the Kilnsey Crag Overhang. A breathtaking experience that gives a remarkable insight to how the Ice Age glaciers played a major part in carving the landscape of the Dales.

Other notable attractions and places of interes

t are the Kilnsey Park and Trout Farm, Hebden, Stump Cross Caverns and many more. Some exciting tourist activities are windsurfing, sailing, horse riding, fly fishing and climbing. For those who might not be disposed to outdoor pursuits, a visit to one of the various pubs in the area or better still, a trip to the popular Penny Plain Theatre might present a suitable alternative.

Besides the seemingly endless ways of keeping busy, the town offers a healthy choice of places to stay. One such place is the luxurious Grassington Lodge; a guest house which among other enviable services offers lodgers a star gazing experience. Visitors may also decide to stay at one of the reasonably priced hotels, such as the Grassington House Hotel which gazes over the town's cobbled square or the medal winning Devonshire Hotel where guests are treated to the delectable dishes of French chef, Christophe Gettoute.

Also dotted all over the town are cottages, apartments, holiday homes, caravans and other self catering types of accommodation that manage to compete favourably with the hotels and guest houses. Some of them dating as far back as the mining rush era.

Whether planning to stay at a hotel or a holiday rental property, travellers to Grassington should make allowances for visits to its popular annual festivals, the Grassington Dickensian Festival and the Grassington Festival. Both are renowned for their entertainment and cultural values and will almost certainly make tourists pen a return visit date to the Yorkshire Dales in their diaries.
