Isle of Skye

Need a break? Find cottages in Isle of Skye. Looking for somewhere different? Go to the search page.

The second largest island in Scotland and the largest of the Inner Hebrides isles, Skye can be found 75 miles north of Forth William or 80 miles to the South West of Inverness. Hugely popular with tourists, the Island has a much talked about mountainous landscape which is an irresistible lure for climbers and adventure seekers.

The mystifying Quiraing hills on the Trotternish Peninsula form part of the popular picturesque landscape. It is an attraction rivalled by few others in the region and should be a scheduled stop for any holidaymaker. Being in existence for over 150million years, the Quiraing hills are rich in minerals as well as a stunning sight to behold.

Because of the number of tourists that journey to the magical Quiraing every year, there are quite a few lodges and temporary accommodation facilities in the locality. The Cuillin hills, sometimes called the Black Cuillin, is another climber's paradise which also dominates the skyline of Skye.

Apart from its entrancing mountainous terrain, Skye has much more to offer, including an abundant supply of wildlife. Hovering above the misty hills are a wealth of birds; most notably the once elusive Golden Eagle. There are also reported sightings of many others, such as the Goldcrest, Kestrel and guillemot. Other fauna commonly sighted on the island are otters, dolphins, porpoises, deer and shrews.

Skye's fascinating history and culture is also a draw for travellers. First inhabited by the Celts, the Vikings are known to have conquered the original dwellers and la

id claim to the island until the late 13th century when Alexander III successfully drove them out. Many names on the Island are said to be of Nordic origin.

The monumental burial site of Flora MacDonald, the brave lady who aided Bonnie Prince Charlie's successful return to France after the Jacobite rebellion lies in a place called Kilmuir in northern Skye. Not far from Kilmuir is Dunvegan castle, the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. Dunvegan castle has been the stronghold of the MacLeod clan for more than 700 years.

A tourist attraction since 1933, the castle has seen a significant rise in visitors every year and is now listed among Scotland's top attractions. Tours are organised all year round taking tourists through the castle, its divine garden or even on a boat journey to watch the seal colony bask in the waters of Loch Dunvegan. For a reasonable fee, castle sightseers can relax in one of its estate cottages or choose from any of the holiday rental homes, B&Bs or hotels in the surrounding area, most of which also boast splendid views.

Famed for its natural beauty, outdoor activities are among the more popular events on the island. You can try your hands at archery, kayaking, cycling or even diving in the clear blue waters. There is no shortage of restaurants at which to wine and dine, including the much talked about five star Three Chimneys where guest can sample expertly prepared local dishes.

Gaelic is still spoken in some parts but almost all residents can also communicate fluently in English.
