Enjoying one of the mildest climates in the UK, the endearing town of Kingsbridge graces the northern most tip of the gentle river estuary that shares its name surrounded by the soft rolling hills of the South Hams. Renting a holiday cottage in Kingsbridge will allow you to appreciate the pride that this charming Devonshire town takes in welcoming its visitors and in sharing its local history.

Way back in the 13th century when Kingsbridge was governed by the abbot of Buckfast Abbey on the edge of Dartmoor, the resident monks were given permission to establish an open-air market on the quayside to sell their fruit and vegetables, local honey and Devonshire cream. This market tradition has endured until today, Kingsbridge being a vibrant market centre for the whole area. With up to 3 general markets a week, regular farmers' markets and craft and flea markets, the town is a constant hub of activity. There is a real sense of community here in the cobbled streets that stretch upwards from the waterfront, where small, independently run shops exude a warm and welcoming feel. Narrow alleyways wind their way in every direction, each giving a different vista across the rooftops, over the estuary to the patchwork hills beyond. Traditional pubs and inns here welcome passers-by and local eateries offer everything from cream teas on the lawn to fresh seafood lunches overlooking the sea. Anyone interested in the history of the town should visit the Cookworthy Museum, housed in the old grammar school and named after William Cookworthy, who was responsible for the discovery of china clay in Cornwall and the birth of the local

porcelain industry. The museum gives a real feel of rural life in Kingsbridge through the ages.

The estuary below is a birdwatcher's delight at any time of year. At low tide, the mudflats see gatherings of egrets, oystercatchers and mallards, whilst at high tide fishing boats and yachts bob gently in the sunshine and pleasure cruisers wind their way down the estuary to the popular village of Salcombe. The southern part of the estuary is often frequented by dolphins, seals and porpoises and boasts some of the most stunning natural beaches in the UK, North Sands and South Sands being prime examples of the stuff great photos are made of. Salcombe, with its pastel-coloured buildings and exotic gardens, is a popular centre for sailing, diving and watersports and celebrates centuries of historical links with the sea at its fascinating Maritime Museum. Hundreds of luxury rental cottages and lodges dot the 26 miles of estuary shoreline and the countryside inland. Anyone taking advantage of this beautiful setting will also find themselves on the edge of some outstanding walking landscapes, with the towering clifftop walks around Bolt Head providing breathtaking views of the estuary. The lovely sea views continue from the wide selection of excellent coastal headland golf courses in the area, and opportunities abound for other outdoor activities such as horse riding, canoeing and gorge scrambling. With the lovely town of Dartmouth within easy reach as well as Dartmoor and the English riviera towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, this is the ideal place for an active or relaxing self catering break at any time of year.
