Oban

The vibrant town of Oban that lies on the west coast of Scotland has always been a popular destination for many holiday-makers, among them Queen Victoria who referred to the town as one of the finest places to behold. Occupied by a seemingly large number of people in comparison to its size Oban sees an influx of thousands of people during the holiday season -- often more than double the original population size.
Tourism has not, however, always been its mainstay, as fishing and trading were the main sources of revenue for the town's dwellers back before tourism became popular. Benefiting from steamship routes that connected it with Glasgow, talk of the town's beauty and harmonious environment quickly spread.
Today Oban is the unofficial capital of Scotland's western seaboard and often called the Gateway to the Isles because it serves as the main entry point to other Scottish islands. Wherever you stay on this attractive island, you can be confident of having magnificent views of the surrounding landscape including the isles of Mull and Kerrera. A range of attractive and well appointed holiday cottages is available, as one might expect from such a popular destination. Catering for all tastes and depths of pocket, there is a wealth of choice when it comes to eating and drinking. Many hold that some of the best pla

Find cottages in ObanThe Royal National Mod, a festival that has been held in Oban many times gives outsiders an insight into Gaelic culture and history. Scottish Gaelic, an ancient Celtic language, is still spoken in many parts of the Scottish isles. When not engrossed with folklore, there are a lot of things to do and places to go in Oban. The unfinished McCaig's Tower which was erected during the Victorian era by John Stuart McCaig as a monument to his family, remains one of the most conspicuous architectural works in the town. Built to look like a coliseum, McCaig a prosperous banker had many plans for the structure, but his death in 1902 heralded the end of the venture.
The Oban Distillery is another must-see attraction. It is still a fully functional whiskey distillery and visitors can pay a modest entrance fee and enjoy a tour of the premises and of course the opportunity to purchase a drop or two! Whether staying in a luxurious lodge or a comfortable holiday cottage, the whole family can also enjoy exciting boat trips through the Corryvreckan whirlpool or take in the amazing natural beauty of the Firth of Lorn. This is best known for its abundance of wildlife including whales, dolphins, feral goats and of course a host of sea birds.
