Salcombe

In a tucked-away part of Devon known as the South Hams lies the port of Salcombe. Neither major roads nor railways lead here. This is a relatively unknown part of the South West of England. There is not much traffic on the winding roads that lead down from Kingsbridge to Salcombe although you may get stuck behind a tractor as the area is farming country. Driving here takes you through delightful tiny villages where time appears to have stood still. Take your time. This is not an area through which to rush. Nobody rushes here.
Salcombe has always been a popular holiday destination. It is perfect for short breaks in summer or winter. The climate is mild. Salcombe's climate can be almost continental in summer and the winters can be balmy. Snow rarely falls here and a visit to Salcombe makes a wonderful break at any time of year. The town prides itself on its choice of restaurants, high-quality shops and easy access to wonderful beaches such as East Portlemouth and South Sands. The main street of the town runs parallel to the waters edge, and small alleyways spread out up the steep hill to the rest of the town. The streets are narrow with the buildings appearing to compete for space. It is easy to imagine the days when smugglers and pirates roamed these streets.
The Victorian, James Froude, wrote 'Winter in Salcombe is winter only in name'. Because of the mild climate, many species which are not found elsewhere in the UK flourish here. If you are lucky you may spot dolphins in the waters here. This stretch of coastline is also famous for watersports, beautiful beaches and walks. If you are lucky enough to own a yacht, this is the place to sail.<

Find cottages in SalcombeSalcombe is a town with a fascinating history. In 1588 when the Spanish Armada appeared in local waters, Salcombe had fitted out 16 small ships to support the English fleet. Until 100 years ago Salcombe earned its living from the sea. Fishing and boatbuilding were the main occupations. In the 1600s many Devon people were taken to the slave markets of North Africa. Many were ransomed but many never returned. Archaeologists recently discovered a shipwreck which demonstrated that cross-channel trade existed as long ago as three and a half thousand years!
The railway arrived at Kingsbridge in 1893 and there was a connection to Salcombe by steam ferry. Later, motor buses made the town easier to reach. Between World Wars I and II the town developed as an exclusive holiday resort for those who enjoyed the climate, the scenery and sailing. Fortunately developers did not attempt to introduce attractions such as those found in other holiday resorts. The Yacht Club founded in around 1890 was exclusively for men. In 1939, ladies were admitted, although rather grudgingly. No political correctness then!
The season in Salcombe seems to lengthen every year as more holiday home owners make use of their properties and more people take short breaks here. The first mention of a holiday home here was in 1764. Since then, many people have chosen to make Salcombe their second home, forever enchanted by its charms. There is a fine selection of accommodation for the visitor to the area. There are cottages and apartments to rent to suit all budgets. After your first visit to Salcombe and the South Hams you will wonder why on earth you didn't get here sooner.
