Southwold

A delightful town offering year-round interest, Southwold has a working lighthouse, an award-winning pier which was refurbished as recently as 2001, a bustling harbour and charming beach. Southwold is a typical charming English seaside resort, popular for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This is an England which has hardly changed since the beginning of last century.
Almost an island, there is just the one road in to and out of Southwold. This stretch of coastline is known as The Sunrise Coast. Fully trained lifeguards patrol the beach which has won awards and that makes it very attractive for families. There are brightly coloured beach huts too, many with humorous names.
The town, although with an air of gentility, is a busy, working town. There is so much to do and see that you are spoiled for choice. The track of the former Southwold Railway line has now been turned into a lovely walk. At the harbour you will discover a range of boat trips. You can cruise around Solebay or up the River Blyth to Blythburgh and back again. There is also a three-hour cruise to Scroby sands where you will almost certainly see seals.
If you seek fresh fish, fine food, good restaurants, galleries and bookshops, then look no further. Southwold has all these and more. Many are unique to the town. At the southern end of the sea front are open marshes and the estuary of the River Blyth. If you look down here you will spot the 'Cathedral

Find cottages in SouthwoldSouthwold has a fascinating history, having been mentioned in the Domesday Book as a fishing port of importance. However, a shingle bar later built up across the mouth of the harbour thus preventing the town from being able to be a major port again. A fire in the town in 1659 damaged many of its buildings. Fortunately, in place of some of the buildings that were razed to the ground, open spaces were created. These were never built on again and today remain as greens.
Southwold Museum has a fascinating collection of items from the Battle of Sole Bay which was fought between the English and the French against the Dutch in 1672.
Around Southwold lies countryside rich in farmland, minor roads lined with old oak trees, shingle and sandy beaches, marshland and commons. On a clear night the skies here are ablaze with stars. Wildlife abounds here too – you are likely to see hares, wild deer and a huge variety of birds both native and migrants. This is an unspoiled coastline. Unforgettable.

About: The cottage is one of a pair on a small common by a converted chapel. It's in a tiny village on the Suffolk coast, right next to the RSPB reserve at Minsmere. The house and garden look out over protected marshland grazed by cattle and home to swans and many other birds. The cottage is a 30 minute walk across fields from the beach at Minsmere. It is just a short drive from Aldeburgh, Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich. There are some wonderful Adnams pubs close by, including the Eels Foot in Eastbridge itself, which is just a 200 yard walk away. It has great food, a garden and a small children's playground. The cottage was a second home to us when our children were young, and has a family feel about it. There is a sheltered patio at the back and a garden to the side, overlooking a water meadow straight out of a Constable painting. Leiston (3 miles away) has all the shops you might need and there are plenty of good restaurants around. There is a wonderful bakers called Smiths, in Leiston, just opposite the cinema... lovely, old-fashioned, white bread. There is a grocers called Baker Bros also in Leiston, which sells the most delicious ham on the bone. Highly recommended. The cottage has 1 double, 1 twin, and 1 double-bunk bedrooms. The bathroom has a shower over the bath. It is on the ground floor. There is an open plan lounge/diner/kitchen with open fire. A picture window overlooks the garden, and there is a sheltered patio to the rear. The garden looks out across beautiful protected countryside and is not overlooked.
