Whitby

With its seagulls, lighthouses, fishing boats and harbour views over cliff-tops, it is not difficult to see why the seaside town
of Whitby is so fondly associated with its colourful maritime heritage. Anyone renting a holiday cottage here will enjoy a real feel of the British seaside of yesteryear, surrounded by the old charm of cobbled streets, Victorian terraces and historic attractions.
The history of Whitby dates back to when a Saxon monastery was built on a cliff-top by the estuary of the river Esk in the 7th century. The town then prospered as a shipbuilding centre and a fishing and industrial port. Today the Gothic ruins of the old abbey still stand eerily on the cliff-top weathered by thousands of North-sea storms. It's a challenging climb up the 199 steps leading up to it, but the views from the cliff-top are certainly worth the effort. This side of town, known as East Cliff, is a charming labyrinth of cobbles and narrow winding alleyways where it is a delight to explore all the traditional inns, craft shops and tea rooms to the sound of seagulls cawing overhead. Here shoppers can buy jewellery created in the lustrous black jet for which Whitby is famous. This distinctive stone was particularly fashionable in Victorian England and is formed from the fossilised remains of a tree unique to the Whitby coastline, dating back to the Jurassic period.
On the opposite side of the harbour, West Cliff stands for family fun, with its wide golden sands, its boating lake, childrens' pad
